What is Online Tutoring?
Joanne Kaminski is a Reading Specialist that has taken her reading tutoring business online. She personally tutors children using Skype, which is a free application. She tutors one on one and specifically focuses on reading skills. Session times can vary from 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on the needs of the family and the child.
Reading online saves so much time. No longer do you need to drive your child to someones house, drive home, and then pick up your child an hour later. All you need to do is set up your child at a computer with Skype and continue doing the things that you personally need to do. Check out some of the videos to see what it looks like.
To begin with Joanne assesses your child to find out exactly what it is that she/he can do. Then she finds out what it is that he/she likes to read and comes up with a completely tailored reading program based on his/her needs and interests. She uses a balanced literacy approach, which includes phonics and whole language. Also included in the lessons as needed are phonemic awareness, phonics/word work, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. She does not believe in a one size fits all mentality and each tutoring session looks completely different based on each childs needs.

Since your child can speak and listen to Joanne, he or she can receive positive feedback and ask questions. And because she is working with her own program and not your child's homework, she is giving your child the tools needed to work independently. After the session, your child can apply the skills he or she practiced to work on homework alone and participate in class discussions.
Online tutors can be less intimidating than a conventional tutor. The comfort of your home creates a safe feeling where a child can risk saying things he or she may be embarrassed to say during class time or in the presence of others at a tutoring center.
